We saw BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME last night and they were amazing. It was the sweatiest gig I think I’ve ever been to but BTBAM must be used to that sort of thing because it didn’t stop them conducting a master class on how to be tighter than a gnat’s chuff.
ASTROHENGEwere up first and the fact they were the only support didn’t seem to faze them one iota. Launching straight into their unique brand of bassless, instrumental, prog/sludge they managed to get the majority of the crowd moving. It definitely seemed like the right gig and the right crowd for them and hopefully they managed to win themselves some new converts by the time they unplugged their gear.
This was one of the first opportunities BTBAM have had to play more than about 20 minutes in the UK and it was easy to tell that both the crowd and the band were going to relish every second. The time BTBAM hit the stage to the time they left was 90 minutes in all and that honestly didn’t feel like long enough. They were by far one of the tightest live bands I think I’ve ever seen but then I suppose that’s what nearly 10 years experience will do for you. I won’t bore you with the details of how amazingly slick the transitions from sheer metallic brutality to the most beautiful, sweeping guitar lines were or even how, for some reason, a couple of bars of polka accordion crowbar’d into a prog epic somehow just works because if you know the songs you’ll already know all about that. Instead I’ll just say that seeing them pull it all off so effortlessly live was something else. There was a definite atmosphere in the Underworld which I can’t help thinking was only enahnced by the cloud of perspiration hovering above everyone. At the end of the set they promised they’d be back and in my opinion, that return visit can’t come soon enough.
If you weren’t there you missed out, big time. We’ll have a video up soon so you can pretend you were there, but if you really want to recreate the evening you’ll have to surround yourself with electric heaters and wrap yourself in a duvet while holding a hot water bottle… It was THAT hot.
